The 20th Century Fox studio is expected to shoot three big-budget movies in Montreal over the next year; each has a budget of at least $100 million. The films are the Night at the Museum sequel Another Night, Independence Day director Roland Emmerich's remake of the sci-fi flick Fantastic Voyage and a big-screen adaptation of the Japanese manga Dragonball Z.

Dragonball Z is adapted from the manga created by Akira Toriyama; the work was also turned into a Japanese anime series that played all over the world. It tells the story of an alien sent to destroy Earth, who has a change of heart and decides to join the humans in their fight against various aliens and bad guys.

There are no details yet as to when these three shoots will begin, but they are expected to wrap production by next July.

I'm not quite sure as what I make of this decision yet. Part of me is estatic for something like this to happen because maybe it'll breathe some life into a dying franchise, but the other part of me just wants the franchise to end peacefully. I'm not saying a movie for the series is bad, I just think a movie of this caliber even with $100 million budget is not enough to satisfy the die-hard fans.

This is... interesting news.

In the end, though, I just cant see it. I honestly dont think that they can portray things like the ki attacks, the high paced action, the special effects, and even the humour in a way that wouldnt end up being a total mess up. Dragonball, and Akira Toriyama in general, just seems too out there for Hollywood.

And, in the end, NOTHING will be enough to please the die-hard fans - Thats the double edged sword aspect to being a die-hard fan.

ETA: I am thrilled, however, that Montreal got the three big flicks. It really is a fantastic city. I will also be checking out Fantastic Voyage, no doubts there.

Wow, that is surprising. I have known about them attempting to do a live version since like '02. But nothing ever really got going so I assumed it was dead. It should be interesting to see how they do it, though.

New bad guys?
New Good Guys?
Hmmm..

or would they just go through all the sagas in about two hours?

It is rumored that they'll do the Saiyan Saga. However, I don't know if they'll leave us with a cliff hanger so they can make more movies or somehow kill off Vegeta and Nappa. The reason I'm hoping their is a cliff hanger is because at one point they wanted to make the movies over the Saiyan, Namek, Cell, and Majin Buu saga's.

They'll leave it on aa cliffhanger, it just makes good business sense. Think about it, this is Dragonball Z - next to pokemon, has there been a more prolific series to be imported from Japan? Nothing comes to mind.

There are loads of fans all over NA who will see this movie, even if they hate it. It will be vey very hard for Fox to bomb this movie, even if it sucks the big one. Just think of all the hardcore and longtime fans who will go and see it whatever its like. And then there is the market who just like cheap action flicks. Look at all the wire-fu movies being imported from China and Japan - Jackie Chan and Jet Li sells. I'm positive that no matter how hard the movie blows, with a budget of 100 million bucks Fox will provide a feast for the eyes.

Lets face it, the North American public loves mindless action flicks, and DBZ will provide that. They also love flashy CGI, nd once again, DBZ works. Most importantly, they dont like to think - and DBZ is hardly the thinking man's anime. In the age of crappy superhero flicks (i.e. The Fantastic Four) Fox wins from this, in almost every way.

They will churn out sequal after sequal the minute they realize just what it is they've got in their hands.

If they make the movie and kill of Vegeta I'm boycotting anything Fox...

I think the Saiyan saga would be kind of boring in a movie....Cell and Buu sagas would be interesting. And also, who do you think will star in the movie?

Really? I would disagree completely with that assessment, if only because each saga grows and builds on each other.

The Frieza saga, for instance, while it would be visually amazing, lacks any sort of poignancy. we would not be privy to the extreme pride of the Saiyan race (as evident in the Saiyan saga), nor most character development. Who are these Nameks? Why does Gohan like this Piccolo? What is the importance of this Krillen fellow being knicked? Yeah, sure, the action would be much better, but it loses all substance.

The Saiyan saga, although the action wasn't really fantastic (some exceptions, of course), it was worth watching because the characters are interesting and you want to see what happens to them. The point I'm trying to make is that a DBZ movie just wouldntwork unless you went back to the beginning.

As for who would star... not a clue. Although I seriously hope they stay away from using dubbing and getting the VAs from the series to do it. Dont get me wrong, I like a lot of the voices... but no. I also hope they stay away from any big names. Big name celebrities always kill movies for me, unless I am watching the movie for that particular actor.

I think it would be best for them to do the Saiyan saga as lame as it would end up being.

Since reading this i have look it up and it says and i quote "Ben Ramsey has been brought in to pen the screenplay for the Dragonball Z adaptation for 20th Century Fox. The plot follows the adventures of an adult humanoid alien who's just discovered that he was sent to Earth to blend in and destroy our population but instead elects to protect it from an oncoming alien onslaught" sound like syan saga

Now that they have said what saga for the most part that it will be i was woundering if you have thories on which actors/actresses will play them

i heard rumors that they'll be doing the demon piccolo saga

but i don't know how reliable that source is because they'll probably want to make a movie where Goku is a grown up

Live action...this is not going to be anything like DBZ IMO. I don't think it'll work out.
