I'm just after viewing and reading about the leaked footage of one of the levels from modern warfare 2. Basically it involves the player shooting down civiallians at an airport. This has caused alot of controversy over the last day or so and has caused activision to release this official statement:
The controversy the scene has caused is because people say it will bring back painful memories of terrorist attacks. This is perfectly understandable. I can see some people playing this and it bringing back some bad memories for some, especially those who had loved ones killed in one of the travesty's. However I also feel that there is a fine line here as well. Could this not also be true for army men who have been to war and played previous versions of the game or even any other war game? Surely there should also be protest against this. Activision has already addressed the issue and stated that players do not have to play through this level, but surely the fact that the level exists and the players know its there will cause the pain anyway? |

As usual, people are overreacting. At least in my opinion, it seems like the politically correct bandwagon has rolled around again and they're desperately trying to climb on. Honestly, if memories of war or terrorist strikes are something you have, I have to ask: why in the hell are you playing the game in the first place? To me, that seems like the bigger deal here. It's moronic to think that a victim of terrorism would actually go so far as to play this, or any other, war game. It's like someone who was hunted by the mob playing a game in which you're on the run from the mob.
Also, I'm incredibly sick of all the squawking over 9/11. Now, I'm perfectly aware that this was an act of terrorism, and a horrendous one at that, but I'm beginning to think we Americans are really making too big of a deal about it. Do we hear the Japanese and German's complaining when we depict them as cold-hearted murdering psychopaths in any other war game we release? No. But the second 9/11 is even hinted at, people start bellowing out the national anthem and frankly, the only real slander against the event is those people who see something slightly risque and compare it to what happened. The only game that deserves criticism for tastelessness as to the terrorist strikes of 9/11 is the internet flash game where there are mounted rocket launchers atop the twin towers, and you have to strike down on-coming planes to protect them. Saw it on the news, and it's the only game I've seen worthy of actual hate. I hate the CoD series, yet because of all the people complaining about it, whining that it's hateful, that it's going to bring back pain (must . . . ignore . . . irony), I'm buying it, just to spite them. People need to get a grip and move on. At least in my opinion. |

I will be buying the game. I really enjoy call of duty but i just find it intersting that the big deal is being made and activision are even back tracking. Surely if this is part of the game it must be played. No option should be allowed, lets see the game in it's true glory. What I'm trying to say is that a world war 2 based game must bring hurt if this is peoples thoughts. There's been countless world war 2 based game's and they have not caused this controvesy. Play the game fully and take it as is. It's just a game!

I'll end up buying the game at some point. I'm going to agree with Bucky here. The people that would actually be affected by this type of scene on that kind of level are the people who would not buy the game for that very reason. I do understand creating the mandatory checkpoint shortly beforehand, but in all actuality, those most likely affected would not play the game in the first place.
I know there are always exceptions, but I would be surprised to hear of, say, a former soldier who is/has suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder, or a person so deeply effected by terrorism buy this game. Knowing the potential reactions such a person would have should prevent them from doing so. |

I'm not surprised that Activision actually put a checkpoint in there. If you've followed their releases at all, they tend to be a little on the nutty side, in my opinion. Maybe not so much nutty as mainstream, but to me, it means pretty much the same thing.
And KD, I know what you mean. Personally, I'd like to see the game without the checkpoint (then again, it doesn't really matter much in the long run), but it's an American company. If Activision didn't put the checkpoint in there, there most likely would be hell to pay. 'Cause like I said, American's are frickin' out of their damn minds (I think I'm case and point on that note, lol). It's okay if we portray the Japanese as a bunch of xenophobic assholes and the German's as blonde-haired, blue-eyed (oh, the hypocrisy! I'm sure glad I have no shame) Nazi's, but the second America, the supposed greatest country on the planet today (intense sarcasm, there), is shown in anything but a Godly light, people go apeshit calling the product - in this case CoD:MW2 - tasteless, hurtful and anti-American. Really, it's disgusting and it's part of the reason I hope to move out of the country some day. Anyways, I'm getting horribly off track here. My point is that Activision are just caving into the demands of the hypersensitive public, most likely. If they displease them, chances are it won't do well for their business. To go a little off point again, let me state that I think the politically correct are all a bunch of jerks who need to find something better to do with their time. You know, rather than sit around and wait for something that might offend a certain class within the United States, to jabber pointlessly on about. News flash. Nobody likes them, 'cause they're buzz-kills. |
